Anonymous asked: would you consider yourself a feminist?

meistens:

I never responded to this, sorry

I definitely am in the sense that I believe in and desire true gender equality (and I mean absolutely all genders, not just the cisgender binary) and that I will actively call people out on sexist bullshit as I see it

that said, I’m an able-bodied straight cisgender middle class white male and am therefore a member of the second most privileged group in the entire world (replace middle class with upper class and you’ve got #1). I have exactly zero experience of oppression in any way whatsoever. I can’t ever know firsthand what oppression based on gender, race, class, etc. feels like.

my bandmate rowan pointed out that in our society, we’re still at a point where men who are feminists are lauded for their opinions, despite the fact that women share their views and are not treated in anywhere near the same way for holding them. I try to avoid actually vocally labelling myself as a feminist at the risk of society deciding to spotlight my views rather than proudly spotlighting the countless women who hold the same views and who fight for them every day, because I think it’s fucking time that men stopped trying to speak for women.

but yes, long story short, I would definitely say I’m a feminist, but I’d rather just do my part than be that guy who talks about doing his part.
